There are quite a few Seattle area events that make our annual list of must-attend every year but few from the other side of the mountains make the list. One event worth the drive is Celebrate Walla Walla, a weekend long salute to one of Washington most esteemed wine region. Each year the event celebrates a specific varietal – Cabernet Sauvignon in 2013 and Syrah in 2014 – and Merlot will be the belle of the ball this year.
Compare and taste Merlot from the Walla Walla Valley, Napa Valley, Bordeaux and Tuscany during Celebrate Walla Walla Valley Wine – The World of Merlot, June 18 through 20. One of the most anticipated events of the weekend is the all-star winemaker panel featuring:
- Marty Clubb, L’Ecole N° 41 | Walla Walla Valley
- Casey McClellan, Seven Hills Winery | Walla Walla Valley
- David “Merf” Merfeld, Northstar | Walla Walla Valley
- Renée Ary, Duckhorn Vineyards | Napa Valley, California
- Vincent Lignac, Château Guadet | Bordeaux, France
- Virginie Saverys, Avignonesi | Tuscany, Italy
Guests attending the winemaker panel will have a rare opportunity to compare and contrast the growing conditions and wine styles from each region, and taste Merlot from all six producers.
Other events during the weekend include a tasting of rare vintage wines from 30+ Walla Walla Valley wineries, a dinner featuring the culinary delights of local chefs and Merlot wines from 40+ wineries, a kick-off session featuring Wine Critic Stephen Tanzer and Master Sommelier Fred Dame, and an opportunity to partake in one of 10 exclusive winemaker dinners throughout the valley.
