Last month I zipped down to Palm Springs for the Food & Wine Festival Palm Desert. It was a very hot weekend in the Coachella Valley (think 100+ temps) so while pool time was limited, we managed to get in some cooling food and drink at the festival.
Lots of California wines and a variety of International, only one wine company from Washington State was there, can you guess who it was? You are right if you guessed the entire portfolio of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. I started with Riesling and worked my way through to the Antinori wines from Tuscany. California standouts included Clayhouse Wines (Paso Robles), Sterling Vineyards (Napa Valley), Grgich Hills Estate (Napa Valley) and Calcareous Vineyard (Paso Robles).
Grazing my way through the event I met the owner of Clementine, a gourmet marketplace and cafe’ located on El Paseo and she is featured in the video below. Clementine is a lovely European flavored bistro that just started serving dinner and also offers lunch and gourmet take out, plus they have fabulous culinary gifts.

As events go, this was a nice event albeit the weather really wasn’t all that helpful. Many of the restaurants served either latin inspired or lighter seafood style bites. In comparison to events in the Seattle marketplace, I was surprised by the lack of diversity in the food items and frankly it was just too hot to eat much!
Palm Desert and Palm Springs make for an interesting marketplace overall. With business being so seasonal it must be difficult to keep restaurants full during the summer months. It does seem that there are more places opening up and that the level of dining is improving. I look forward to many more trips to the Palm Desert area and am on a mission to learn more about the culinary scene and find the hidden gems.
Every time I visit I learn a little more about the area and some of the cultural events that take place there like the Palm Springs Film Festival (January), Food and Wine Festival Palm Desert (March), The Cochella Valley Music and Arts Festival (April) and Palm Springs Desert Resorts Restaurant Week (May 29 – June 7, 2015).
